Match Report
Radley College Boys-U14A vs  Tonbridge School
On: Saturday, 07 Oct 2023
Venue: at Home

This week has seen the squad work hard on producing a two layered attack with various options available to a whole host of ball players at the tackle line. This framework takes time to develop as small mistakes can often lead to the breakdown of the overall objective. This proved to be the case last week v St Paul's where a good initial set of two or three phases was spoiled by a poor decision on the ball, or a lack of discipline in the contact area, anything as small as ball presentation being a decisive factor. We have worked on ruck speed, two-sided attacking options, speed of support to the breakdown, basic passing skills and so much more. There is always a specific goal that we aspire to meet for each game - this week was all about having options either side of the breakdown after initially posing a threat with our double layered set up.

Tonbridge are always tough opponents to play against and today was no exception. The game started with furious intensity, Tonbridge putting together over 20 phases of attack, with Radley tackling furiously, led by captain Bayly. However, well worked tried followed for Radley from Grey, Johnstone, Garson and King before half time. Radley started the second half well, playing some proper rugby in attack now, a lot of time showing the ballcarrier two options at the tackle line, a short flat pass and a pass out the back too. One try from Carter Shaw was a perfect example of how to narrow a defence before playing to width. Johnstone, Pryde and Garson crossed in similar fashion. Fullback King was superlative off the tee, his goal kicking is a huge asset for this team.

Thank you as always to the parents who turned up in great number to support us. The team are working hard to be the best they can be and are determined for the progress to be evident as the season develops. A quick turnaround sees us at home to Eton next Thursday.
