Fabulous team performance that swept a solid Oratory team aside! A tense and physical start saw both teams come close, Radley surviving a few dangerous moments from free kicks and corners. Rory van der Grift was creating numerous chances from right wing with skill and positivity, often from defence-splitting passes by Nokes and Coke, but early chances lacked a cutting edge in front of goal. That changed half way through the first half, as Hector Wade worked the keeper from a Grift cross, then found the net twice before half time with one firm shot to the right and another accurate finish to the left after good build up play that was becoming increasingly fluid. Behind this, Waller and Jacobs (man of the match) were particularly busy repelling frequent Oratory forays.

Second half saw the level raised. Grift began a fluent team move and struck a thunderous close range shot that was miraculously saved. But before long the pressure told…. A hat-trick completed for Wade with a nice dinked finish was followed by goals for Ruddy, Morley (fine far post header from a brilliant corner) and two for Grift (the first a fierce close range shot, the second a penalty), with another saved onto the woodwork. Oratory lost coherence in the second half as their heads dropped, but proactive defending was critical to keep them at bay. All 14 squad members can hold their heads high for a high energy and skilful team performance that has propelled Radley to the top of the league table. Let’s hope we can repeat this intensity and quality for subsequent matches!
