The focus in training since our Wellington fixture has been on bring width, pace and variety to our attacking play. As such there was a notable improvement in the way that the team used the space offered on the pitch. We mustn't forget that for many of the boys, this was only the second time that they have played on a full size pitch so adapting naturally takes some time. Regardless, we did this well this afternoon. Hutchinson and Bremner linked well, meaning that Bremner could easily find width through the right and left halves or even high positions on the pitch, with Wickens at centre forward being the main beneficiary.
It was Wickens who gave us the lead with a well finished chance from a one on one with the keeper. Newbury made it too on the reverse just before half time. The floodgates then opened as the athletic Radley XI started to let the ball do the work for them, slapping passes with good width and intent to round their opponents. Rugby offered skill through the spine of their team but persistent Radley attention meant those players enjoyed little space. Oyewumi added a second half hatrick, two of which game from beautifully deflected shots at goal, the latter in particular being a really special finish. Wickens added a second and Hargreaves finished with composure when given space and time to pick his spot.
Lee made an impressive debut at left half and Bayly looked assured at centre back after playing previously at left half. Saturday will present a tough challenge when Tonbridge come to Radley. A 14.30 push back gives us the prime time viewing slot. I would hope that the boys feel motivated to build on today's performance and once again add layers to their Radley hockey experience.
