First game of the season against new opponents. Both sides looked to play flowing, passing hockey. Radley began well with the back 4 ball speed causing the Wellington press problems. Good pressure especially down the right side led to a string of corners. Olly Southan going close before Will Matthews smashed the ball into the bottom corner. 1-0.
Radley survived two Wellington corners and went into half time 1-0 up.
The second half started as quickly as the first but this time Wellington were appplying all the pressure. A turnover in the Radley defence and the ball was fed to an unmarked Wellington forward. He finished well on the back hand. 1-1.
Within two minutes Radley were back in front, a slip by the Wellington keeper gave Archie Durden Smith a simple tap in. 2-1. Wellington back on the attack and pressure was mounting on the Radley defence. Another corner and this time the flicker made no mistake. 2-2. Realising this was their way in Wellington fed ball after ball into the Radley D and won another corner. An even better flick and Radley were behind for the first time 2-3.
With a few minutes left Rory Acheson Gray continued to push forward, winning every 50-50 ball. This pressure led to a rare poor aerial from the Wellington sweeper. Will Matthews intercepted, fed Olly Southan who slipped past his defender, drew the keeper and finished cooly in the corner.
Final score Radley 3-3 Wellington. Lots of good passages of play but plenty to work on as well.
