Match Report
Radley College Midgets 1 vs  Eton College
On: Thursday, 08 Feb 2024
Venue: at Home

This was an excellent game of hockey. Eton probably relied on a few skilful players to move the ball down the pitch, Radley really tried to pass the ball properly. Bremner showed his class in midfield, pushing higher up the pitch and being more aggressive in his desire to win the ball back. In the first half Midgets 1 created several promising situations but some good defending or a missed place pass often cost us. When we did execute well we found we were against an excellent keeper who saved impressively from King and a Bremner reverse. They also had a few moments of promise but Cordle in goal dealt with them easily. 0-0 at half time.

The second half started poorly from us. We failed to clear our lines on several occasions and Eton then managed to score from close range. As has been the pattern of the last 3 games we then finished very strongly in the final 15 minutes. Newbury deflected home expertly from close range to bring us level and it looked like we were the only side who might win it. We carved out several chances but against that quality of keeper we needed to have feet facing the goal when shooting or players ready to deflect or a close in 2-on-1 v the keeper to score. Sadly we could not manage that.

I am sure the boys were disappointed not to have got over the line to win but as coaches we were impressed with the way in which they are listening to advice and a pattern of play is clearly emerging. We just need to win some more short corners (only 1 yesterday)!

I am sure the return of having Bignell and Bullen fit after Leave Away will also help us.
