A soft pitch under still blue skies provided a perfect battleground for these old rivals, although Eton were sadly not able to offer contested scrums. The Oxford ring road ensured advantage to Radley, with Eton late of the coaches. An early try suggested this with the backs finding a 3 man overlap in the Eton 22 and Meynell bursting through. But Eton hit their stride rapidly with strong ball carriers breaking frequently through some half-hearted tackling and allowing them to pull clearly ahead by the break, when they were 17-5 up. The half time talk was chastening and Radley came back out with something to prove. A new edge to their tackling and strong commitment to the rucks ensured they had the ball to play with and a trial of Woo at inside centre saw Radley capitalise on that, scoring three times in the second half with break-throughs in the midfield and around the wings. Morley collected some of the extras. It was 24-17 at the close and both teams could be satisfied with a well-contested match.
